Yeah can't argue with that, but he clearly had an issue with drink. There were probably all sorts of things going on that we don't know about

Having an issue is one thing, but it doesn’t make you get behind the wheel of a car.

I think the fact he’s a great guy who does a lot of work behind the scenes covers over the fact he is actually a very good footballer at this level.

His range passing with either foot goes under the radar too.

After some of the bluffers, charlatans, and absolute dead beats that have turned out for us over the last 15 years or so in particular, Luke O’Nien has been a breath of fresh air.

The lad loves it here, and has from the start, and make no mistake, he’s in that side on merit.

I’ll never have a bad word to say about that lad as a bloke. That’s not to say if he makes a mistake you can’t acknowledge it, or his form is poor you can’t say so, I’m talking about his attitude.

I like the lad but nowhere near legend status at SAFC.

Yes, it’s a weird phenomenon. Tonight, that glorious switch pass over to the right wing confirmed the point, again. Luke O’Nien is not just an honest tryer, a hard worker, a joker and mentor … He’s a very talented player.

There’s clearly a lot of players from our long and decorated history, but in the modern era he must be up there?

Nothing would make me happier than seeing him get a PL appearance to his name.

Define modern?

I’d probably say anyone after Gary Bennett.

Crikey - a CB who has scored 23 goals + 18 assists in his 6+ seasons here and given opponents a piggyback, a kiss and wound them up no end - our all time greatest shithouser.

- and you say nowhere near legend status?

Luke is our best modern day icon. The lad is a legend in his own lifetime already. Love him, we do.

His attitude and application are the things younger lads in the game should strive towards as Onien is a limited footballer, but his workman like qualities make him so hard to leave out.

I wouldn't want him starting in the premier league, I think his ceiling is this league tbh, and the speed, strength and ability of most the sides in the league above would be too much for Luke, but then I would say that would probably be the same for most of our lads tbh.

A family member has a severely disabled young son, the support and friendship they get from Luke and his wife would be amazing from family never mind a professional footballer. He is a tremendous ambassador for our great football club, an elite 300+ player and a grounded lad living our dream. What's not to like!

You are either on a wind up or under 18.

Drove past him down the beach the other month. Pretty sure he had the dog in one hand, pushcair in the other hand, and was still out for a jog.

Which just about sums him up.

He is the type of player we have dreamed about since bally, is he the best player in the world? No. Does he give you everything he has? Yes. Has he continued to improve. Yes. Has he embraced the club as his own despite not being from the area (like when bally arrived), Yes. Can we rely on him? Absolutely! He would play anywhere for this club and plays with his heart on his sleeve. After watching years of absolute shite like kone, rodwell etc etc take the absolute piss out of this club and not giving a flying fuck. I'd take Luke o'nein every day of the week. He's our modern day bally and yes he's ours. He's one our own and represents the club fantastically. Congratulations to him on 300 appearances and here's to many more!

Not sure.

Definitely above Chopra and Rodwell, though.

Seriously, a great fella...hope he gets to play a few games in the premier league with us.

Nobody deserves it more.

I'm 60 in a couple of weeks. Name somebody for us in the last 20 years who epitomises the word Legend more than Luke.

He's everything you want from a player, in spite of some limitations: a model professional who gives everything he has, on and off the pitch.

Who mentioned from the last 20 years?

The lad did that you were lambasting for saying that he's a legend. He quite clearly says "modern day icon". Was there a part of that that you didn't understand?
